If GOI does proceed with the plan to increase the legal age for marriage for women to 21 years, thereby bringing it at par with the legal age for marriage for men - a proposal approved by the Union Cabinet on December 15 - it will mean India will join a handful of Pacific Island Countries and the US state of Mississippi to have the highest legal age of marriage for women.
