Call on NA tax on hsg societies in Feb: Minister

Maharashtra revenue minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil told TOI on Saturday that he would review the demand for scrapping the non-agricultural (NA) tax applied on various housing societies in cities like Pune and Mumbai next month.
The minister said as of now the " stay on collection of these taxes" on housing societies continues in the state. " The committee under the additional chief secretary (revenue) is appointed to examine the issue. The committee is expected to submit its report next month, following which a decision will be taken," he said.
Housing association members represented by Suhas Patwardhan, the vice-president of the state cooperative housing societies federation, said they had approached the state government to abolish the tax completely last month as many societies were unable to pay such huge amounts and worried that the ' stay' might be lifted ahead of the financial year. " We are hoping that the government takes a favourable view in this regard," Patwardhan said.
All properties, including housing societies, falling under the ' gaothan' areas, as classified by the collector in accordance with the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1960, have to pay the NA tax. The only exception is the educational institutes.
Of the approximately 2 lakh housing societies and apartments in the state, only 10,000-15,000 societies fall in the ' gaothan' area and are exempted from this tax.
Societies that are over 60 years old are made to pay arrears that have been opposed and the amount runs into lakhs of rupees. Advocate Satya Muley, who represents the aggrieved parties across the state in the Bombay high court, said, " The NA tax is illogical. The present government must look at its archaic provisions in a rational manner."
